EUnetCCC

Information for professionals about the research project "EUnetCCC - European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres" at the Office of Health and Collaboration at Lillebaelt Hospital.

Description of the project

The overall objective of the project

The European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EUnetCCC) is a Joint Action under the EU4Health Programme, aiming to establish a cohesive network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) across Europe. The initiative seeks to ensure that by 2028, 90% of eligible cancer patients have access to high-quality, comprehensive care.

The main objectives are to:

  • create a sustainable European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs),
  • promote structured cooperation between CCCs, harmonised quality and certification standards, and
  • reduce inequalities in access to high-quality cancer care across the EU

This initiative stands as a cornerstone in building more resilient, equitable, and excellence-driven healthcare systems by promoting the certification and integration of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) and Comprehensive Cancer Care Networks (CCCNs) across Europe. Its continuity is essential to guarantee that all cancer patients – regardless of the country they live in or their socio-economic status – have access to integrated, multidisciplinary, and personalised care, aligned with the highest clinical and scientific standards, thus delivering on the core promise of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and safeguarding the health of future generations

2024 – 2028

European Commission — EU4Health Programme (EU4H)

WP3

WP3 develops and implements an evaluation framework for the JA EUnetCCC and EU network of CCCs in collaboration with coordinators and WP leaders. This framework includes four tracks covering KPIs & monitoring, process & output evaluation, outcome & impact evaluation and learning, feedback & dissemination. WP3 develops and maintains a dashboard to provide stakeholders with evaluation data.

WP3 manages and collects data including KPIs, satisfaction surveys, co-creation workshop outcomes, and interviews, and will also explore evaluation data produced by other WPs. WP3 also develops and monitors Indicators to measure the impact of JA. Data will be analysed to provide feedback, track progress, offer insights to guide strategic planning, identify areas requiring enhancement, and assess the project's effectiveness

Each year WP3 publishes an evaluation report to present key findings actionable recommendations. WP3 also advises on future strategies to improve the effectiveness of the EU network of CCCs based on evaluation insights. Key insights will also be published in scientific journals

WP4

Lillebaelt Hospital is part of the first wave of pilot cancer centers under work package 4 (sustainability).

As a Pilot cancer center, Lillebaelt hospital acts as a field test for the Comprehensive cancer center certification process. This process consists of evaluating and implementing the EunetCCC set of criteria and standards – developing and implementing institutional capacity as needed, in order to live up to the standards required for certification.

Along the way, feedback is delivered to work package 4 trough monthly and yearly reports, describing the capacity building process in detail, including successes and challenges encountered in the process – and how challenges were resolved.  At the end of the pilot process, lasting approximately 18-24 months, the collective knowledge from the pilots will be shared by work package 4, serving as guidance for future cancer centers undergoing CCC certification.

As a pilot center, Lillebaelt hospital can also participate in knowledge exchange activities arranged by work package 4 and other work packages, as well as testing of tools and frameworks developed withing the EUnetCCC Joint Action.

WP6

Implement a robust Maturity Model to help candidate CCCs map their strengths and growth areas, providing a strategic starting point for tailored development

Deliver dynamic capacity building through coaching, mentoring, teaming, and pairing; empowering centres with the expertise and confidence to meet certification standards

Create an open-access hub of practical tools, validated methodologies, and expert insights to guide and inspire centres on their certification journey

Proactively identify and support centres in facing their unique challenges and starting conditions, ensuring that no centre is left behind in the drive for excellence

Develop and deploy meaningful quality improvement indicators and monitoring systems to support continuous progress, accountability, and measurable success

Deliver a comprehensive preparatory guideline and seven hands-on, domainspecific implementation guides, providing a clear roadmap for centres striving to meet the EUCCC standards

WP8

Establish Collaborative Networks: Build thematic networks among CCCs to combine expertise and resources for impactful joint initiatives, aiming to elevate cancer center performance.

  • Enhance Clinical and Managerial Practices: Improve efficiency in implementation and quality in impact in clinical and managerial guidelines.
  • Strengthen Personalized Prevention: Strengthening CCCs' capabilities in primary and secondary personalized prevention.
  • Elevate Cancer Research: Raise the quality and effectiveness of CCC research ecosystems.
  • Accelerate Precision Diagnostics: Accelerate the implementation of precision cancer diagnostics infrastructure and expertise.
  • Optimize Clinical Data Use: Enhance the secondary use of clinical data for research and governance.
  • Develop a European Clinical Trials Engine: Establish a robust framework for clinical trials across Europe.
  • Implement Survivorship Programs: Introduce comprehensive cancer survivorship programs in all EU CCCs.
  • Improve CCC Governance: Advance the governance and performance of CCCs and their networks.
  • Facilitate Knowledge Exchange: Create a platform for sharing best practices, challenges, and opportunities in networking, mobility, and patient involvement.
  • Forge Strategic Partnerships: Identify and collaborate with key strategic partners to support network activities.
  • Communicate Outcomes and Evaluate Impact: Disseminate network achievements and assess their impact to continually enhance network operations.
  • Networking reaching out from EU: In collaboration with WP1 connecting the EU network activities to relevant institutions and networks beyond the borders of EU, including G7 Cancer partners.
