JANE-2

Information for professionals about the research project "JANE-2 - Joint Action Network of Expertise on Cancer" at the Office of Health and Collaboration at Lillebaelt Hospital.

Description of the project

The overall objective of the project

JANE-2, part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), aims to establish seven pioneering Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in oncology over the next four years. Building on the outcomes of the previous Joint Action JANE, these networks will address key areas of cancer care, including complex cancers, palliative care, survivorship, prevention, omics technologies, high-tech medical resources, and care for adolescents and young adults with cancer.

The JANE-2 project unites 132 partners across 29 European countries and is co-financed by the European Union under the EU4Health Programme.

The NoEs will set new standards in oncology by delivering services such as clinical guidelines, public awareness initiatives, innovative healthcare models, education for patients and medical professionals, promotion of research, and quality accreditation mechanisms.

As a cornerstone of JANE-2, these networks will foster collaboration among healthcare providers, patient advocates, scientific societies, and research institutes, ensuring sustainability and creating synergies with other EU initiatives.

The main objectives are to:

  • Strengthening collaboration between European cancer stakeholders through structured Networks of Expertise
  • Improve the quality of cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship care across Europe
  • Reduce inequalities in access to specialised cancer expertise
  • Support the implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan through coordinated European action

By the end of the project, the NoEs aim to operate independently while driving excellence in cancer care and prevention across Europe.

The role of Lillebaelt Hospital

Lillebælt Hospital Vejle leads Work Package 3 - Evaluation, which focuses on assessing the progress of the Joint Action and ensuring that project activities achieve their intended outcomes at European, national, healthcare provider, and population levels. Lillebælt Hospital Vejle plays a significant role in all WP tasks and leads two of the four tasks within the work package.

Further contributions from Lillebælt Hospital Vejle include serving as Task Leaders in Work Package 8, Personalised Cancer Prevention, specifically as leaders of Task 8.7 - Evaluation. Task 8.7 focuses on monitoring and evaluating the NoE's progress to ensure WP8 achieves its objectives, delivering high-quality outcomes with significant impact at all levels, from the EU to individual patients.

2024 - 2028

European Commission EU4Health Programme

WP3 developed and implemented the Evaluation Framework to assess JANE-2’s progress and post-JA impact. This framework provides a structured approach with methodology, tools, and indicators to monitor milestones, outputs, and outcomes. It also includes guidance on data reporting, storage, and visualisation, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement.

As part of WP3 activities, a comprehensive monitoring system for JANE-2 was established. This includes the development of key performance indicators (KPIs) covering process, output, and outcome levels, a data collection system for KPI tracking, and the dissemination of findings through annual process reports and an internal dashboard to monitor KPI progress.

WP8 focused on identifying and evaluating key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the progress, quality and impact of the NoE on Personalised Cancer Prevention. KPIs were identified, and systems for monitoring, data collection, and reporting were implemented in collaboration with WP3. Supporting activities included WP8 meeting evaluations, progress reporting, and collaborative work with the WP lead and task leaders to ensure alignment and joint efforts in establishing the NoE.
